Happy Friday all 🙌 Following on in our series of “Resin” work.... another project from a while back 🫗 This was for the wonderfully talented Landscape and Garden Designer Ann Marie Powell who’s enthusiasm, energy and generosity made this difficult technical project one of the happiest to have worked on It's definitely worth checking out glimpses of her beautiful current RHS build, @ann_mariepowell The brief for the red cells was to be translucent and to withstand the weight of four people on them with no internal structure to affect internal lighting. Morning all, just thought to share a lovely post on behalf of my wife Lucy, @lucyburleypots Thank you for the post @thebyregallery As part of the Byre Gallery’s 10th anniversary celebrations, I am sharing a series of #CreativeEncounters: the stories of how I met some of our stalwart artists and makers. Next up, the wonderful @lucyburleypots. 'Bottle mania' was how one client described the Private View of our 2016 exhibition ‘Out of the Picture'. She wasn’t referring to the amount of wine consumed that evening but the popularity of a collection of ceramic bottles by a maker new to the gallery. I’d rarely seen such a flurry of red stickers in an exhibition, so I knew that this was a ceramicist I needed to keep hold of! I first saw Lucy’s ceramics the year before and recognised straight away that it would be a perfect fit for the gallery: beautiful simplicity of form enhanced by exquisite glazes was a winning combination. And since those first boxes arrived - quickly followed by a re-stock - the Byre Gallery has never been without a piece of Lucy’s ceramics. Not only is Lucy’s work always gorgeous, she is a delight to deal with and always wonderfully open to any suggestions, whether its a colour palette, a new form, or a collection. When it comes to curating my exhibitions I’d be lost without her work - there is always an ideal Lucy Burley piece to complete any ‘look’. It goes without saying that I’m a bit of a collector of her work myself: bottles, bowls, (including one in need of repair after it was ‘admired’ by @sidney_gallery_dog) jugs, and vases are all very evident in my house, and there is always room for another one! We have a stunning new collection of bottles online from 1st March - you can see a trio of them here, along with some of my other favourite pieces from the past few years. Ancient throwback ! This was me in 1982 at my degree show. The two clocks on the shelf ; mould blown glass on a slip cast ceramic base were inspired by the late great Richard Rogers after visiting the astonishing Pompidou Centre the previous year. Many years later I had the privilege to work on some of the interior parts of his amazing Lloyds of London building. A recent project for the brilliant Toogood company. Our brief was to enlarge a series of small maquettes they had made and cast from random found objects. This required a lot of experimentation matching colour, scale, aggregate size where cast, and the feel of each abstract piece. It was a unique opportunity to play with materials and processes to try and achieve the outcome. From this we discovered some very interesting and unique combinations which will be very useful in the future. Delighted Farnham has been awarded World Craft City status; it was an honour to meet the jurors during their weekend visit in February “Farnham’s application to the World Crafts Council was shortlisted in February this year and a jury including Marion Poortvliet (Crafts Council Nederland) and Rosy Greenlees (Chair World Crafts Council) paid an on-site visit to the town. The jury had a full itinerary visiting a unique collection of craft organisations and huge variety of makers in the town. Councillor Pat Evans, Mayor of Farnham says: “Farnham has a powerful reputation for craft education as well as nurturing and promoting the careers of some very talented makers. Our fantastic arts and crafts venues haveenabled craft to be embedded into our everyday life. A huge thanks to everyone who supported our CareWorkers Charity band project which took over my IG page for a while during lockdown, over £1400 raised ! More “ making” posts will be continued, plus the occasional guitar build! Here’s a development of a recent personal project based loosely on a Giacometti form. The form has vertical symmetry in one plane, there are many ways to make the master pattern, CAD, modelling completely in clay or modelling left and right hands and then moulding. I decided to use a grid method after drawing front and side profiles. It’s a pretty accurate way of making the whole form with the intersecting vertical and horizontal planes giving enough surface points to then fill in the voids with whatever, in this case poly but it could have been anything to hand, rice cakes? The form is then skimmed with plaster and moulded in a hard GRP case and the finished casts taken in glass reinforced plaster. I gilded the interior and base. This grid method though quite old school is very accurate and has been used to form anything from car body’s to complex armatures and is quite satisfying in its 2D to 3D process.
